Is there anything Michelle and Barak Obama can’t do? They can run a country, write damn powerful books and now the couple of all couples are Oscar-winning producers. They are the definition of booked and busy.
Netflix’s American Factory won Best Documentary Feature at the Oscars 2020, which took place on Sunday. Michelle and Barak Obama were not at the ceremony but it’s their production company, Higher Ground’s first Oscar win.
Whilst the film’s co-directors, Steve Bognar and Julia Reichert, accepted the award, Barak Obama took to Twitter to congratulate everyone who was behind the film.
The former First Lady added: “Congrats to Julia, Steven, and the whole crew on winning Best Documentary for #AmericanFactory, Higher Ground’s first release! So glad to see their heart and honesty recognized—because the best stories are rarely tidy or perfect. But that’s where the truth so often lies.”
The Netflix documentary follows a Chinese company who reopen a shutdown factory in Ohio and in a film about clashing cultures and the plight of those trying to experience the American dream.
American Factory was released on Netflix last August and speaking about working with the Obamas, the film’s director, Julia Reichert, said they were “wonderful people.”
Julia continued to say in an interview with Huffington Post: “It was amazing when we heard that the president and the first lady had seen our film, and wanted to embrace it and wanted to elevate us as filmmakers…I mean, they’re very much into artists and writers.”
Appearing in an interview to promote the documentary on Netflix’s YouTube channel, Michelle said, “one of the many things I love about this project is that it’s not an editorial… I mean, you truly let people speak for themselves.”
Congratulations to the Obamas – their CV is literally getting fuller by the day. What a couple and what an incredible documentary.
