Hilarious trick Elton John played on Rod Stewart exposed — ‘You cow!’

John’s friendship with Stewart has been well-documented over the years, as the two rock stars have accumulated more than five decades of professional rivalry. The two even gave each other drag nicknames — John is known as Sharon while Stewart is referred to as Phyllis — and the pair have been competing for the top spot in the charts since the Seventies. Sometimes the pair took their competitive friendship off stage and would play tricks on each other, too.

Writing in his 2019 autobiography, ‘Me’, John described one particular trick when Stewart dubbed his friend a “cow”.

He explained: “Rod was playing Earls Court, and the promoters advertised the gig by flying a blimp with his face on it over the venue.

“I was staying in London and could see it from my hotel room.

“It was too good an opportunity to miss.

“So I called my management, who hired someone to shoot it down: apparently it landed on top of a double-decker bus and was last seen heading towards Putney.

“An hour later, the phone went.

“It was Rod, spluttering: ‘Where’s my f***ing balloon gone? It was you, wasn’t it? You cow! You b****!’”

Apparently Stewart exacted his revenge a year later when John was playing at Olympia and had a banner promoting the gig hung in the streets.

John said it was soon cut down, and Stewart was the first person to alert his friend over the phone.

The crooner told his John: “Such a shame about your banner, love.

“I heard it wasn’t even up five minutes.

“I bet you didn’t even get to see it.”

Chatting to Scottish radio, Stewart said: “I do love Elton, only we’re not talking at the moment.

“We’ve had a spat because I criticised his tour as being money grabbing.”

He said Rocketman was “not very flattering”, too.

While the two regularly argued in the years before, and would text each other to compare their album sales, it is believed that these comments from Stewart were the last straw for John.

Stewart also appeared on an American TV chat show and criticised how John has said he was going to retire in the past only to make a comeback.

He said that the tour “stinks of selling tickets” and is “not rock ‘n’ roll”.

However, Stewart’s friend Johnny Mac said in January that the feud will not last long.

He told Express.co.uk that “I don’t think it’s a fallout”.

He explained: “I think it’s just something that’s been done over the years.

“This is me purely saying it as a fan, I think he loves Elton.”

He concluded that at the next awards show they will be “all kisses and cuddles as normal”.
