'High neutral' is the colour trend everyone's asking for RN because it's so flattering

If blondes do really have more fun, at least there’s a plethora of blonde hair colours to choose from.

If you’ve tried white blonde, platinum blonde, ash blonde, strawberry blonde and dark blonde hairstyles, there’s a fresh new iteration of blonde – and it’s all over our social media feed.

Instagram is awash with people rocking high neutral hair; a stoney blonde hue that’s super flattering.

Louise Garrett, Creative Director, Gina Conway Aveda Salons, says the hue has gained major popularity because it’s more flattering on skin tones than other variants of blonde. “If golden blonde just doesn’t work against your skin tone, or the platinum is too much maintenance, you will welcome this neutral beauty,” she says. “Imagine a pale sand, with a hint of light beige, still bright but looks ever so natural. This can easily be incorporated into your highlights, balayage, or all-over bleach and tones with a glossing treatment which lasts up to 6-8 weeks with a colour safe shampoo.”

Knight & Wilson Hair Expert, Scott Cornwall, agrees, adding: “A high neutral colour finish means it doesn’t feature cooling overtones like platinum or ash. Unlike metallics and platinums, it is a neutral shade that suits both cool and warm skin tones. The trend is emerging off the back of block bleaching and excessive balayage, which can ultimately be very stressful on the hair.”

Scott says the key to this shade is the foundation so he says you should switch away from bulky bleach balayage application and towards the use of high lifting colourants applied in super fine threads throughout. “You will still need to use a toner, to neutralise excess orange. However, you do need a degree of warmth to remain in the hair, so the cool hues of the toner and the warmth of the base clash to create that high neutral hue.

Bernardo Vasconcelos, the celebrity hairstylist behind Adriana Lima and Izabel Goulart’s hair, says this colour hue is all about softness, dimension and transition. “It can be as bright as platinum but offering less commitment and easier maintenance. We balance out the shades using ashy and warm, creating a natural, beige-blonde finish,” he said.

Experts believe the new colour trend is more versatile than platinum, because it’s not a single flat colour so you can play using your natural base and skin complexion as a reference to basically make the look your own.

Aftercare is key so don’t forget to use a great hair toner for blonde hair to stop any unwanted brassy tones from showing through, and always consider switching up your in-shower product regime to include a sulphate-free shampoo to make your colour last longer.

Not into blonde? No worries! How about embracing brunette shades or learning how to get grey hair?
