Here's why you should be 'triple cleansing' for the best skin of your life

The basis of every great skincare regime starts with a good cleanse. Whether you plump for a creamy cleanser, micellar water or a deep-cleansing exfoliator, removing the day’s grime is a prerequisite to squeaky clean, glowing skin.

Alas, it now seems that one cleanse – nor even a double cleanse – is good enough in our quest for clear skin.

According to skincare experts, we should all be triple cleansing if we want to get the glow. So what exactly is triple cleansing, how exactly should we be doing it and what are the benefits?

“Only cleansing once at night is like taking a shower with your clothes on,” says skincare guru, Tata Harper, who lauds the benefits of a triple cleanse.

With pollution levels booming – especially in the city – and makeup and skincare products being heavier and longer-lasting than ever – triple cleansing adds a crucial third step that will ensure that your skin is super clean and fresh.

The first step is to remove the day’s makeup and the idea here is to use oil-based products, for example, cleansing oil or cleansing balms. micellar water is also a cult favourite – especially to remove eye makeup.

These greasy products will attach themselves to the dirt, makeup and excess sebum, and lift them off once you wash your face. You could also use a wet flannel with warm water for a really thorough removal.

Now that you’ve removed your makeup, it’s time to actually cleanse the skin. During this step, instead of using heavy duty products, you should use nourishing cleansers. Look for formulas that are soothing and are ideal for your skin type. Thoroughly massage it into the skin, and wash it off.

The third and final step is to give the skin one last sweep to ensure every last scrap of makeup has been removed; this step will take just a few seconds and will leave skin fresh, clean and glowing. Plus, deeply-cleansed skin provides the perfect base for makeup.

Navigating your way through the big wide world of cleansers can be testing (will a foam dry out my skin? Should only micellar water touch my face? Is a balm too oily? WTF is a powder cleanser?), but boy is it worth it when you find ‘The One’!

The first and most vital step in your morning and evening regime, is to find one that removes makeup, clears away grime, doesn’t strip the skin dry, AND leaves it softly moisturised. Is that too much to ask?

No, it’s not. And here are our favourite products to prove it.
