‘Hellboy Animated’ 4K Release Brings Back the Original Cast in a Fantastic Double Feature

hellboy-animated-4k-reviewIf you’re a fan of Guillermo del Toro‘s original live-action Hellboy movies and wish you had just a bit more time to spend with the fantastic cast, you’re in luck. A pair of animated movies featuring the voices of Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, Doug Jones, and the late John Hurt is available for the first time on 4K Ultra HD release. Now, fans everywhere can enjoy Hellboy Animated: Sword of Storms and Hellboy Animated: Blood & Iron, remastered with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos technologies, to continue the adventures with everyone’s favorite pyromancer, fish-man, and hellspawned demon. Plus, you’ll get to enjoy a solid list of special features, including featurettes that delve into the making of the animated movies, character-focused histories, and commentary tracks from Hellboy comic creator Mike Mignola and animation veterans Tad Stones, Phil Weinstein, and Victor Cook.

Unfortunately, unless you have a 4K player, you won’t be able to check out said special features. That’s a bummer, especially considering the combo pack includes both a Blu-ray and a digital copy of the movies. So imagine my surprise and disappointment when I found out that neither the Blu-ray nor the digital copy include said bonus features; buyer beware. However, at a suggested price of only $22.99, the remastered and bloody enjoyable animated features are worth the cost alone.

Sword of Storms dips into Japanese mythology in order to pit everyone’s favorite title hero up against demons of legend, while Blood & Iron opts for a more traditional tale from vampire lore. Blood & Iron is the better of the two by far thanks to more dynamic fight scenes; visually striking color palettes that shift from indoor to outdoor, day to night, and even include a battle by the light of a roaring fireplace; and a storyline that explores the relationships of the members of the B.P.R.D. So if you just can’t make it to April 12th without some more Hellboy in your life, consider picking up this worthwhile double feature on 4K/Blu-ray today.

In the first animated feature from director Tad Stones (Buzz Lightyear of Star Command), a folklore professor becomes unwittingly possessed by the ancient Japanese demons of Thunder and Lightning. But when The Bureau of Paranormal Research & Defense dispatches a team of agents to investigate, a cursed samurai sword sends Hellboy to a supernatural dimension of ghosts, monsters, and feudal mayhem. Now, while pyrokinetic Liz Sherman and fishboy Abe Sapien battle one very pissed-off dragon, a lost and cranky Hellboy must find his way home. Even if he can survive the perilous journey, how much crap does a guy have to put up with from the two most vengeful and ferocious spirits of Japanese legend?

When Hellboy, Liz Sherman, and Abe Sapien are assigned to investigate the ghost-infested mansion of a publicity-hound billionaire, they uncover a plot to resurrect a beautiful yet monstrous vampire from Professor Bruttenholm’s past. But before they can stop her bloodbath, Hellboy will have to battle harpies, hellhounds, a giant werewolf, and even the ferocious goddess Hecate herself. How much crap does a guy have to take from a Hungarian Blood Countess before he and his surrogate father can avenge the souls of the damned? It’s going to take more than just a horde of very pissed-off demons for our heroes to see the light in this animated adventure from creative producers Guillermo Del Toro and Mike Mignola.
