Helena Bonham Carter has urged the public to purchase a white rose to help fund nurses and midwives.

To mark the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth, the Harry Potter star wants to use the simple gesture to thank nurses who ‘meant a lot to them’.

The star, whose great great grandmother was Florence’s aunt, explained: ‘Buying a white rose is a simple way to honour our nurses and midwives.

‘We must never forget the sacrifice they make on an everyday basis during this time….’

She continued: ‘My late father was nursed at home for 24 years by hundreds of different nurses. I’m indebted to every one of them. That is why I’m buying shedloads of roses!’

After the coronavirus lockdown is lifted, a floral display will be unveiled at Westminster Abbey, ‘marking and honoured the contribution of nurses and midwives everywhere’.

After being cooped up inside for so long, we can’t to see the ocean of roses.

Along with celebrating the bicentenary of Florence’s birth, the Alice In Wonderland star appeared on Louis Theroux’s podcast to discuss filming with her former partner Tim Burton.

Speaking on Grounded With Louis Theroux, Helena recalled her and Tim ‘really didn’t get on’ while working on Sweeney Todd.

‘I’d never sung before, he had never done a musical and it’s that classic thing that you take your stress out on the person who you know best and we really didn’t get on during that one,’ the actress said.

‘Amazingly I got pregnant but let’s not get into that.’

She added the director is a ‘hilarious man and we had a lot of laughs but there were times when working together was not harmonious’.

‘We weren’t very argumentative as a couple except on Sweeney,’ the star continued.
