'He looked a bit upset': Ed Kavalee reveals his family's amazing link with superstar Elton John 

Rock superstar Elton John famously married Renata Blauel at Darling Point in Sydney on Valentines Day in 1984.

And a member of comedian Ed Kavalee’s family got up close and personal with Elton, 72, the day before the big event, it was revealed on Thursday.

Speaking on 2Day FM’s Grant, Ed & Ash breakfast show, Ed, 39, said his aunty spoke with Elton at the church – and even patted the star singer on the leg.

‘My aunty said, “When everyone was fussing around there was just a young man sitting by himself at the back [of the church] and he looked a bit upset so I went over to him”,’ said Ed.

‘And I said, ‘hello dear. Are you OK?’ And the man said, ‘Yeah, no, I’m the groom, I’m just a bit nervous.’ And my aunty patted him on the leg and said, “Don’t worry, dear, it’s all going to be all right”.’ 

Ed then quipped: ‘And you know what, she was right, the marriage worked out.’

The marriage, in fact, was a failure, with the couple divorcing four years later in November 1988.

Elton came out as gay shortly after and has been married to long-term partner David Furnish, 56, since 2014.

The couple now have two sons together, Zachary, 8, and Elijah, 6.

Elton and Renate met in early 1983 in London, when the singer was finishing his Too Low For Zero album.

On February 10, 1983, while having dinner at an Indian restaurant, Elton proposed to Renate and the engagement was announced the following day. 

The wedding took place just three days later at St Mark’s Anglican Church in Darling Point, Sydney.

Elton was 36 at the time and Renate was 28. 

In 2017, while on tour in Australia, Elton released a statement in support of gay marriage, and wrote about his regret about his marriage to Renate on Instagram: ‘Many years ago, I chose Australia for my wedding to a wonderful woman for whom I have so much love and admiration.

‘I wanted more than anything to be a good husband, but I denied who I really was, which caused my wife sadness, and caused me huge guilt and regret.’
