HBO’s Ballers to Spotlight League of Legends Esports, Teams

HBO television series Ballers premiered its fifth and final season yesterday, unveiling a season-long story arc that features League of Legends and teams such as Splyce and Team Liquid.

Riot Games posted a trailer ahead of the season premiere, teasing League of Legends pro-competition and scenes set at the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS) Studios in Los Angeles, California, as well as Riot Games headquarters.

Ballers stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Spencer Strasmore, a retired NFL player who now serves as a financial manager for current NFL pro players. The trailer suggests that the storyline revolves around an NFL player who is looking to enter the esports industry.

As shown in the trailer, the season will also feature appearances from League of Legends teams, players, and executives. One clip shows Echo Fox co-founder Rick Fox—a three-time NBA champion—while another includes a Splyce-branded vehicle. We also see a prominent shot of Team Liquid player Yiliang “Doublelift” Pang on the LCS stage.

Ballers also stars Rob Corddry and John David Washington and premiered in 2015. The eight-episode final season will conclude on Oct. 13.
