Have your cake jar and eat it with our top tips on the new sweet trend

CAKE, anyone?

I am loving the trend for cake jars, with Marks & Spencer even launching its own selection.

They are perfect for picnics or other outdoor shindigs but are around £4 a pop, so you can make them cheaper at home.

I had a chat with Instagram baker Lucy Flynn, from @lucy_jane_cakes, who gave me her savvy tips.

FANCY A JAR: There is much to like about a cake in a jar.

Lucy says: “Cake jars are as tasty as cupcakes but last much longer due to being airtight, so can be enjoyed for even longer.

“Plus, you can make them any flavour you like by adding jams, sauces, sweets, chocolates and so on.”

Lucy has crafted versions with Biscoff and Jammie Dodgers. Yum!

WASTE NOT: Jar cake does not have to look perfect and is a great way to use leftover crumbs that may have gone in the bin.

Lucy says: “If you have made a cake already, and trimmed the top to make it level, cake jars are a great way to put the unwanted sponge to use.”

UPCYCLE: While you can buy any kind of jar for your cake, you can also use old ones you may otherwise have lobbed in the recyling.

Lucy says: “Old jam, Nutella, spread and sauce jars can be used — just make sure they are thoroughly cleaned first.”

You could even refill a used Marks & Spencer Colin The Caterpillar jar, if you fancied recreating one of the chocolatey treats.

PACK IT IN: Lucy says: “My top tips for making the most out of your own cake jars would be to break up the sponge and to then use a spoon to push it down and pack more into the jar.

“Use a piping bag to pipe the icing on top of the sponge then add any sauces or toppings to the jar.”

Lakeland does a great range of piping bags — but at £9.99 for 50, plus postage, you can save a few quid by heading to eBay where I have seen similar bags selling for £8.55 with free delivery.
