‘Have I misunderstood?’ Piers Morgan silenced by Lisa Nandy as he goes on Meghan rant

Lisa Nandy told off ITV’s Piers Morgan for “pushing back” during the interview as the Labour leadership hopeful explained, “some sections” of the media treated Meghan Markle poorly. The Labour MP for Wigan added the media are allies in the fight against racism. Piers Morgan said: “This idea that somehow we’re all a bunch of racists but the coverage of that wedding was completely the opposite. It embraced everything that Meghan Markle could bring to the monarchy so, I just don’t accept this narrative because she then got criticised for significant missteps.”

Speaking to GMB, Ms Nandy said: “I don’t know who you’re pushing back against in this interview because I said exactly the opposite.

“I said it was a real shame that some sections of the media treated this as the way that they did because most of the media including papers are allies in the fight against racism and discrimination in Britain.

“I would much rather that their voices were heard.”

Mr Morgan added: “Did I misinterpret you there? You’re actually saying you don’t think the media has been racist towards Meghan Markle?”

Ms Nandy replied: “I don’t think the media is one entity. I think there are different parts of the media who do different things.”

The Labour leadership candidate was challenged to admit Jeremy Corbyn was “a disaster” for the Labour Party as BBC host Nick Robinson confronted her on a speech praising the interim leader.

Ms Nandy was challenged to stop praising the work of Jeremy Corbyn and admit his leadership led to the abysmal results the Labour Party recorded at the last general election.

BBC Today programme presenter Nick Robinson said: “Earlier you said you were brave, honest and principled.

“And I’m saying, if you’ve had the worst defeat since the 1930s, does it make sense for you to come on the programme to say, ‘Jeremy Corbyn is a great guy?’

“It was a disaster for your party. If you are going to be brave and honest and principled, isn’t it time you said so?”

Ms Nandy however dismissed Mr Robinson’s argument and insisted Mr Corbyn helped Labour “move the conversation” in his four years at the helm of the party.

The Wigan MP said: “I don’t think for a minute somebody who’s spent the past four years getting absolutely trashed by sections of the media, including parts of the BBC, and having to go out and fight these battles and make the case for a better country, I don’t think he deserves to be trashed.

“I don’t think that helps the Labour Party either.

“One of the few lessons of the past few years is that when you trash the Labour Party, all the public hears that Labour is no good.”

Ms Nandy added: “And actually Labour has done a lot of things in Government and Jeremy Corbyn has done a lot to move the conversation in the Labour Party.”

The Wigan MP is one of the four remaining candidates to succeed Jeremy Corbyn as leader of the Labour Party after Jess Phillip and Clive Lewis dropped out of the race.
