'Have Boris Johnson and Matt Hancock ignored their own coronavirus advice?'


The two men leading our response to coronavirus tested positive today.

PM Boris Johnson and Health Secretary Matt Hancock both say they have mild symptoms and intend to work on while in self-isolation.

The Mirror may not share their politics but we wish them a speedy recovery and hope their families and loved ones remain healthy.

In another worrying development, the Chief Medical Officer, Chris Whitty, announced he too had symptoms and was self-isolating.

The fear now is that other leading politicians and officials could also fall victim when the country requires leadership and expertise.

This triple blow poses the question – have those giving the rest of us advice on social distancing been diligent in following it?

Downing Street’s handling of this crisis has not been without fault but if we are to weather the next few weeks we need the wheels of Government to turn as smoothly as possible.

For the nation’s sake we need our leaders and experts to stay in good health.

Tonight, people up and down the country leaned out of their windows and stood on their balconies or front door steps to clap, thanking NHS workers for their hard work through the coronavirus pandemic

On Thursday evening you came out in your millions to applaud our NHS staff.

This thunderclap of appreciation sent a huge message of support to all those on the front line at this most challenging of times.

They are working all hours and putting their health at risk to save as many lives as possible. Knowing everyone is cheering them on will have been a much-needed morale booster.

When this is finally over these heroes and heroines deserve to be officially recognised.

That is why the Mirror is calling for all NHS staff and volunteers who served their country in its hour of need to get a special medal.

They are the few looking after the many and we owe them an enormous debt of gratitude.
