Haulage firm gets award nod for putting young people on road to logistics career

Bullet Express is up for an Insider Youth Initiative award after putting young people on the road to a career in logistics.

The Lanarkshire firm puts fresh recruits through Modern Apprenticeships giving them an insight into how the haulage business and its clients work. In the process, they shape workers who grow up with the company’s close-knit culture while filling an important skills gap.

One of them, Cameron Smith, 21, completed MAs in Warehousing and in Driving Goods Vehicles, and has passed his Cat C and Cat CE licences.

Robbie Weir, 19, has completed his MA in Warehousing and has moved on to his Driving Goods Vehicles MA, with a view to sitting his Cat C licence.

The Bothwell and East Kilbride firm’s transport manager Andrea Gardner said: “We recognise that in this industry we have a shortage of drivers, so if we are employing young individuals and investing time in them through training, they will be more likely to stay in the industry and we can keep bringing younger people through.

“As a business it has helped a great deal as we are being able to train young peolple up the ‘Bullet way’.”
