Harvey Weinstein has been taken to hospital today just hours after he was sentenced to 23 years in prison.

The disgraced Hollywood producer appeared in court on Wednesday (11 March) where Judge James Burke handed down a 23-year sentence following his conviction for sex crimes.

Hours later, Weinstein’s spokesperson Juda Engelmayer confirmed he had been taken to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan for ‘ongoing heart problems and chest pain’.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Weinstein had begun to feel unwell at Rikers Island prison before staff decided to transfer him to hospital ‘for safety’ adding that ‘he will be evaluated and likely will stay overnight’.

Engelmayer also stated: ‘We appreciate the care and concern of the Department of Corrections officers and staff.’

Weinstein, 67, was previously taken to Bellevue Hospital hours after he was found guilty of criminal sexual act in the first degree and rape in the third degree last month.

He spent 10 days at the hospital and had a procedure to implant a stent to remove a blockage, before being returned to Rikers Island where he remained until sentencing.

It was then reported that Weinstein was ‘miserable’ in jail after taking a bad fall at Rikers.

‘He fell on his head and thinks he has a concussion. His head has been pounding since yesterday,’ Englemayer previously said.

‘He’s miserable but trying to be optimistic as best he can. He has had a lot of time to think about his life and be humbled, but he thinks it’s going to be a long, uphill battle from here.’

Weinstein was found guilty of sex crimes against two women which took place in New York City.

During his sentencing hearing, Weinstein spoke in court, and said he had fond memories of his accusers.

‘I’m not going to say these aren’t great people. I had wonderful times with these people. I’m just genuinely confused. Men are confused about this issue.’

He also told a court that men facing similar allegations in the #MeToo movement are being accused of ‘things that none of us understood’, and said he was confused by the rape case he was convicted for.

‘I am totally confused. I think men are confused about all of this…this feeling of thousands of men and women who are losing due process, I’m worried about this country.’

He is later expected to be moved to a prison in upstate New York.
