Harvey Weinstein 'begged ex-wives to put in a good word for him with judge'

Harvey Weinstein reportedly begged both of his ex-wives to put in a good word for him with the judge before his sentence was handed down.

But it’s said that both Eve Chilton and Georgina Chapman refused to vouch for their ex-husband.

The shamed former movie mogul was sentenced to 23 years behind bars yesterday, weeks after he was found guilty of sexual assault and rape.

The New York Post reports that the 67-year-old had asked his ex-wives to send letters to the judge before his sentence was handed down.

Weinstein was married to his former assistant Eve Chilton from 1987 to 2004, and to British actress and fashion designer Georgina Chapman from 2007 to 2017.

It’s reported Weinstein was hoping that letters from them would convince the judge to give him a softer sentence, but that they both refused to write letters on his behalf.

After he was sentenced yesterday, the women who had testified against him walked out of the courtroom crying and holding each other.

In an emotional video captured by an American journalist, they were seen clinging to each other as they hugged and cried.

They were met with cries of “Justice” from the crowd as they walked out of the court alongside prosecutors.

People in the hallway clapped and cheered after seeing Weinstein jailed for 23 years.

After the sentencing, Weinstein, who had arrived at court in a wheelchair, was taken to hospital.

He began complaining of chest pains after arriving at the notorious Rikers Island in New York, and was transferred to Bellevue Hospital.

He had spent time in the hospital following his sentencing, with critics accusing him of faking his illness to avoid going to Rikers, where he was due to be remanded until his sentencing.

Speaking of his latest transfer to hospital, Weinstein’s spokesman, Juda Engelmaye, said: “He was having chest pains and the Rikers staff decided for safety to send him back to Bellevue now.

“He will be evaluated and likely will stay overnight. We appreciate the care and concern of the Department of Corrections officers and staff.”

He was found guilty of two offences last month at a trial that lasted weeks in Manhattan.

Weinstein was also convicted of the third-degree rape of Jessica Mann, a former aspiring actress, in 2013.

He was acquitted by the jury on the more series first-degree rape charge of Ms Mann.

Jurors also cleared him of a further two counts.
