Hart Shoreditch Hotel London – review

Set in the middle of Shoreditch, directly opposite Italian trattoria Gloria on Great Eastern Street, lies one of East London’s newest hotels.

Hart Shoreditch Hotel London is a hip new 126-room establishment from Curio Collection by Hilton which initially opened in January 2020 but closed shortly after due to Covid.

We checked in following its August reopening…

Style

Designed by London-based interiors brand Fabled Studio, Hart Shoreditch Hotel takes its influences from East London’s industrial past and the building’s history as a centre for craftmanship. The hotel is named after its former occupants, the Harts, who were cabinetmakers in the 1800s. Design details include a large wrought iron and copper spiral staircase and mahogany light fixtures which are a nod to the shapes and materials used to create cabinetmakers’ boxes.

Rooms and suites are decorated in a muted colour palette of contemporary greys, corals and burnt oranges with copper mirror accents and, like the rest of the hotel, are dotted with trinkets, ornaments and books which all in some way hark back to East London’s artisan past, giving this large hotel more of a boutique feel.

Food & Drink

Despite being surrounded by some of the capital’s coolest restaurants, a visit to Hart is worth it for the food and drink alone.

Levantine restaurant Barboun fizzes with something of a New York vibe at weekends when it offers a popular free-flowing champagne brunch. The Eastern Mediterranean menu combines flavours of Levantine dishes from coastal towns which are cooked over an open flame, as well as head chef Fezile Ozalgan’s own Turkish Cypriot heritage.

Begin with drinks at Tavla, the hotel’s all-day lobby bar, which has a good selection of barrel-aged cocktails and does a great whisky sour. Head on for dinner at Barboun – we started with light bites of beetroot fritters with whipped feta and the crispy squid with coriander mayo and chickpea flour, followed by baby chicken with charred corn and tahini and an outrageous beef short rib with iskender sauce and garlic yoghurt for mains – you won’t have to eat again for days. Wash it all down with a bottle of red from the menu, which showcases wines from Turkey, Lebanon and Armenia, and finish the night off with a sweet of baklava and traditional Turkish coffee cooked over hot sand.

While the hotel boasts an impressive breakfast and brunch menu, for now, due to Covid, it is only offering a takeaway breakfast of a croissant, granola, panini, juice and choice of tea or coffee, which can be enjoyed in bed, and certainly covers all the bases if you’re in need of fuelling up ahead of a busy day of sightseeing.

Which room?

Choose from nine categories of bright guest rooms and suites, ranging from a Queen Guest Room to a King Skylight Suite. All feature floor to ceiling windows with city views, dressing tables with good size vanity mirror and other amenities such as a built-in sound system to gear you up for a night on the tiles (when you’re allowed to). Sumptuous beds offer the perfect respite after an afternoon browsing Spitalfields market and the stylish bathrooms featuring concrete vanities, herringbone flooring, geometric tiling, brass fixtures and roomy rain showers offer ample room for a pre-dinner spruce – some corner rooms also have fancy freestanding tubs, too.

Who for?

People looking for a cool new spot to spend the night while exploring the boutiques, bars, restaurants and markets of one of London’s buzziest neighbourhoods. The hotel has become understandably popular with couples opting for a mini-break staycation over travel abroad this year. Additional amenities, such as a good size gym (42.5sqm), meeting room and work space next to reception, mean this would just as easily suit business travellers who are after something a little more hip.

Once things get back to normal, this is bound to become a go-to place to rest your weary head in style after partying the night away.

Details

Room rates start from £102/night for a Queen Guest Room, rising to £249/night for a King Skylight Suite. We stayed in a King Superior Room ((£165/night), which offers a few little extras, like a Nespresso machine and fluffy robes.
