Harry Styles reveals heartbreaking meaning behind Falling in candid interview

Harry Styles dropped his second solo album Fine Line, the follow-up to his self-titled debut, back in December. It peaked at number three in the UK albums chart and features singles Lights Up, Watermelon Sugar, Adore You and Falling. There has been much speculation about the meaning behind the lyrics for the new ballad, with many fans debating whether or not it’s about his ex-girlfriend Camilla Rowe.

In an interview with RADIO.COM, Styles explained the truth about Falling, saying it was about a period of time where one starts falling back into a dark place.

“Falling is about getting right before a place that you recognise as a low for you,” he said.

“You kind of feel yourself falling back into that down period, I guess, and being sad about what you lost.”

The lyrics for Falling include the lines: “I’m in my bed / And you’re not here / And there’s no one to blame but the drink and my wandering hands.”

In the chorus, Styles croons: “What am I now? / What am I now? / What is I’m someone I don’t want around?

“I’m falling again / I’m falling again / I’m falling…”

Some fans spied a clue in the music video which appeared to hint Falling was about Styles’ split from his French-American ex-girlfriend Rowe.

In the video, which sees the popstar sat at a grand piano as the room around him fills with water, the silhouette of the Eiffel Tower can be seen outside the window.

“I think I’ll look back on the time of making this album as a very fond period of my life just because I feel like I learnt so much about myself.

“Probably a lot to do with having time to do that,” he continued. “I took a little longer to make the album.

“Every album I made before that was done pretty fast and this kind of turned into about a year,” the former One Direction star explained.

“There was a lot of time to sit and think, a lot of time for self-reflection.”

He also shared insight into the meaning of several other tracks from the album.

“Adore You, to me, is about that initial excitement of meeting someone and you’re kind of excited by them. It’s the honeymoon period of dating,” he said.

“Watermelon Sugar is about the euphoria of being in love with someone.

“It’s similar to Adore You but it’s more about the all-encompassing, visceral euphoria of being with someone when you start seeing someone and just kind of wanting to immerse yourself in them,” he continued.
