Hand luggage rules: This unlikely everyday item is BANNED in cabin baggage

Hand luggage requires careful thought when it comes to packing, especially if that’s all passengers are taking with them. If all your holiday items are packed into a carry on bag it’s important they’ll all make it past security. It could prove a frustrating start to a trip away to have something confiscated. Some items which are prohibited could come as a surprise to travellers, however.

One unlikely item which is banned from going in hand luggage is hair dye.

This is due to the presence of chemical peroxide in the dye; it comes under forbidden ‘Chemicals and Toxic Substances.’

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) states: “You cannot take any of these items as hand luggage or in the hold: oxidisers and organic peroxides, including bleach.”

A spokesperson from luggage website MyBaggage.com said: “Ensuring everything you pack at home is allowed onto the plane is an easy way to prevent a stressful experience once you reach the airport.

“Some items you might not think as a problem when packing, but when safety is considered it becomes clear why they aren’t allowed in hand luggage.

“Having items removed from you and potentially being handed a fine is not how you want to start, or end, your trip away.

“Each airline may have different restrictions, so it’s important to check every time you fly.”

Liquids can also prove a difficult one when it comes to hand luggage – particularly when you don’t realise they’re liquids.

Food products can prove particularly confusing which it comes to the liquid or solid debate.

One much-loved item people might pack in their luggage is popular hazelnut cocoa spread Nutella

However, despite its rich, thick and creamy consistency, Nutella is actually classed as a liquid.

This means you can only bring a maximum of 100ml of the popular spread in hand luggage.

Similarly, marmite is not allowed on board in cabin luggage. London City Airport security has revealed Marmite is their most confiscated branded food item.

There was a 50 per cent uplift in passengers trying to take marmite though in the first three months of 2019.

If this trend continues, London City Airport is set to seize over 2,000 jars this year alone.

There is one very useful item passengers can look to include in their cabin luggage that many people may not think of.

“Take plenty of ziplock bags because they come in handy for a multitude of things,” luggage company HB London told Express.co.uk.

Such bags can be useful to store all sorts of belongings – wet clothes, dirty shoes, toiletries, medication and more.

They can also be used to store snacks or a packed lunch – it’s always worth secretly pilfering the hotel breakfast buffet to satisfy hunger pangs later in the day!
