Hand luggage rules: Pack this key item to beat Ryanair and easyJet liquid restrictions

Flights require passengers to be savvy when it comes to packing hand luggage. This is especially important on budget airlines such as easyJet and Ryanair as the carriers clamp down on how much is allowed in the cabin for free. It’s important to avoid packing certain items – and make the most of clever swaps. This is particularly the case when it comes to liquids – only 100ml are allowed on board.

One item travellers should consider not including in their hand luggage is liquid shampoo.

Instead, flyers can pack bars of solid shampoo which will not be subject to the 100ml liquid rule.

They also will not take up precious space in your one plastic bag of liquids.

Lush offers shampoo bars which are said to last between 80 and 100 washes.

These do the job of three 250g bottles of liquid shampoo and cost just £6.25.

Conditioner bars are also available from brands such as The Funky Soap Shop.

It’s also worth remembering that body wash can also double up as a shampoo – as well as a laundry wash

Items that have multiple uses are vital when packing hand luggage – and this rule applies to clothes too.

“Versatile, low-maintenance clothing is the key to packing light,” Adam Ewart, CEO of luggage delivery business Send My Bag, told Express.co.uk

“Take a sarong for example; great for a hot day but can also be used as a changing room at the beach, a tablecloth for a picnic, a scarf if you’re chilly, a makeshift satchel for your souvenirs, a pillow when you’re weary, a head scarf to protect you from the sun… the list goes on. Be inventive and pack multiple-use items.”

It’s important to pack any medications you need in your hand luggage – especially daily ones.

If you’re parted from your suitcase you want to be prepared and still have what’s needed to hand.

Consequently, it’s advised you pack any medicines in your hand luggage

This way you’ll always have the necessary supplies should something go wrong.

This rule can apply to prescription medicines as well as over-the-counter ones.

You should also keep any valuables in your carry on luggage rather than hold – again for in case your luggage is stolen.
