Hand luggage: Always pack this one surprising item in your cabin baggage for flights

Hand luggage for flights is taken onboard planes by the vast majority of passengers. Fliers face all sorts of restrictions with what they can and can’t take into the cabin. They also have to be careful to follow their airline’s hand luggage allowance rules.

Flight comparison site Skyscanner has shared its top hand luggage tips.

There’s one thing they particularly recommend including in your baggage.

Skyscanner advises packing a selection of ziplock bags.

These can be helpful to store items in transit as well as useful to have while you’re away on holiday.

DON’T MISS

“If you want to organise your packing then get yourself a stash of ziplock bags,” recommended the travel site.

“Phone charger, camera charger, adaptors, headphones – take extra plastic bags (the same ones you’d use for hand luggage liquids) and use them to store electrical items, things for the journey home (house keys, parking ticket, and car keys), medication and other loose accessories.”

What’s more, the bags can be used to store wet clothes, dirty shoes, toiletries, medication and so on.

They can also be used to keep snacks or a packed lunch in during your trip.

There’s also a more unlikely use for such plastic bags on a flight.

Darryl Kelly told News.com.au: “In emergencies, retrieve your passport, phone, cash etc. from the overhead locker when the pilot announces that they are about to commence descent and place items in a medium Ziploc bag.

“If you need to evacuate the plane, your most important items are in your possession and waterproof.

“If you are required to enter the water, unzip the corner and breathe into the bag to inflate and re-lock the bag. Your items will now float and remain waterproof.”

It’s also helpful to pack an emergency kit somewhere in your carry on luggage.

“It’s a good idea to create a small bag of essentials in your hand luggage,” home organisation expert Vicky Silverthorn told Express.co.uk.

“You never know when you might need things like wipes, tissues hand gels, plasters, emergency snacks and small toys for the children.”

One thing you should never pack in your hand luggage is soft cheese.

Such soft cheeses include brie, camembert, goat’s cheese, cream cheese and more.

The reason these dairy products are considered as liquids is because they can melt.

Travellers hoping to fly with cheese are advised to pack it in their hold luggage rather than cabin baggage.
