Halloween Kills delayed by one year due to coronavirus as John Carpenter teases more deaths than ever

The anticipated Halloween Kills sequel has been delayed by a whole year due to the coronavirus pandemic, just as director John Carpenter promises the movie will have the highest kill count.

Halloween Kills – the follow-up to 2018’s critically-acclaimed Halloween reboot – will see Jamie Lee Curtis reprise her role as Laurie Strode alongside Judy Greer and Andi Mitichak, all fighting to avoid becoming a victim of the murderous Michael Myers.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Carpenter – who wrote the upcoming sequel – announced the movie will now be released in October 2021 after originally being slated for 21 October 2020.

‘We write this to you heartbroken over the fact that the delay of our film is even a discussion, but there’s one thing that a career in the film industry has prepared us for, it is the unexpected.’

He added: ‘If we release it in October of this year as planned, we have to face the reality that the film would be consumed in a compromised theatrical experience. After weighing our options, we have chosen to push the film’s theatrical release by one year.’

John revealed that Universal studios have now agreed to an IMAX presentation of the film too.

To make up for the delay, the filmmaker also released the first 30-second teaser of Halloween Kills, showing Laurie and co. directly after the events of the last movie.

The Halloween reboot earned applause for the genius way it stayed true to the 1978 original horror while adapting to the modern age – and delivering some seriously horrifying kills along the way.

And according to John, who wrote and directed the original Halloween, the next installment will not be for the squeamish.

‘The cut is done,’ John told IndieWire

‘They’ll mix it in New York in the next week or so. Then it will be in the can. My work is all done.

‘The movie is something else. It’s fun, intense and brutal, a slasher movie times one hundred, big time. It’s huge. I’ve never seen anything like this: the kill count!’ he revealed.

In case you were wondering, Michael Myers has clocked up a terrifying 121 kills over the course of his 40-year spree. Let’s just pray Laurie doesn’t end up on that list this time.

John, 78, has stepped on to write the script for Halloween Kills so if there’s anyone we can trust to deliver some solid teasers, it’s him.

Fans of the Halloween franchise will know that Michael Myers is pretty indestructible – he’s been shot, stabbed, has fallen out of windows and even set on fire – but somehow he always manages to bounce back like the invincible boogie man he is.

However, a question mark looms on how he’ll return in Halloween Kills.

The last installment ended with Laurie, Karen (Greer) and Alyyson (Mitichak) setting fire to Laurie’s house with Michael trapped in the basement. Of course, we didn’t actually see Michael die and he has survived a blaze before so the impossible is definitely possible in this case.

Halloween Kills is yet to unveil its trailer and producer, Jason Blum, recently explained that, frankly, they’re unsure of when it’ll be released.

‘The reason [a trailer] hasn’t come out yet is because we don’t know what the world is going to look like in October,’ the producer said.

‘Right now, we’re still planning on releasing the movie in October but if there’s no way to release it [theatrically], then we’re not sure. So we’re not going to release the trailer until we really are very sure when people are going to get to see the movie. So that’s the hold-up.

‘But we have a great trailer and a great movie and I can’t wait for everybody to see it,’ he explained.

Halloween Kills is now slated for release in October 2021.
