Half Baked 2 Is Happening with MacGyver Star Justin Hires

A sequel to the 1998 stoner comedy movie Half Baked is apparently in the works, as comedian Justin Hires has announced he is writing the screenplay for the project. An actor, musician, and comedian, Hires is perhaps best known for his starring role on MacGyver, though his interest in writing has also led him to penning Half Baked 2. “Excited to announce I’ll be writing the sequel to Half Baked,” Hires says on his Instagram account, confirming reported rumors of his involvement. He adds: “Yes I know the original is a classic and yes this sequel will be [fire] because I’m writing it. Oh yeah, I write screenplays too.”

On his Instagram post, Justin Hires links to a story from Comedy Hype reporting on Hires’ involvement with Half Baked 2. This seems to confirm there’s some truth to the rumored storyline details from that article, giving us an idea of how the planned sequel will play out. Per the report, the sequel will follow the son of Dave Chappelle’s character from the original movie. No other details about the sequel’s story were given, but it’s safe to assume marijuana will also play a central factor in the upcoming movie’s plot. Unfortunately, Chappelle will reportedly not be involved in Half Baked 2 in any capacity, and it’s not yet clear if any other actors from the original will return.

It’s not stated exactly why Dave Chappelle isn’t taking part in Half Baked 2, but this could be because the comedian has gone on record in the past expressing his displeasure with the movie, feeling it was inappropriately geared towards an audience that was too young. “Half Baked didn’t come out the way I wanted it to come out. I was real upset about that, cause it was a real cool script,” Chappelle said in 2014 during an interview on Inside the Actors Studio. “And then I saw it, I was like, “Hey, man, you made a weed movie for kids” and it wasn’t for kids, the script, you know? It was all these things and so much pressure,” he added.

Directed by Tamra Davis and written by Chappelle and Neal Brennan, Half Baked was released in 1998. It starred Chappelle, Guillermo Diaz, Jim Breuer, and Harland Williams as four stoners who take to dealing marijuana to to make bail money after one of them manages to get arrested. Also starring in memorable guest appearances are Tommy Chong, Steven Wright, Willie Nelson, Snoop Dog, Jon Stewart, Tracy Morgan, and Bob Saget. Filled with quotable lines and unforgettable moments, the movie is perhaps the most well-known stoner comedy of the ’90s, following in the footsteps of Cheech and Chong while opening the door for Harold and Kumar.

Like many cult classics, Half Baked was not met with the warmest reception from critics upon its release, but has since developed a rather large following. It remains to be seen if that popular interest in the original will translate into success for the sequel. In the meantime, you can catch Hires on the CBS series MacGyver.
