Guy Verhofstadt IGNORES Brexit Party's huge success but congratulates Liberal Democrats

The European Parliament’s Brexit co-ordinator said the Liberal Democrats result of 15 seats was “amazing”. However, the Brexit Party currently have 28 MEPs in the European Parliament, making them the largest single individual party in the bloc. Mr Verhofstadt told Vince Cable “we will fight for a better Europe”.

But the Liberal Democrat leader will be standing down on July 23.

Mr Verhofstadt wrote on Twitter: “Amazing result for the Liberal Democrats.

“Congratulations to Vince Cable. I look forward to welcoming a big delegation of pro-European Liberal Democrat MEPs to the European Parliament.

“Together we will fight for a better Europe!”

However, Mr Verhofstadt failed to mention the Brexit Party who gained 40 percent of the overall UK vote.

As the Brexit Party made huge gains in the election, the Conservatives suffered cataclysmic losses.

Daniel Hannan, one of three Conservative MEPs, said it is their “worst ever election result”.

He told the BBC: “I think we’ve done a lot worse than we did in 1832, I think in terms of national vote share this is our worst ever result.

“You don’t need to be a psephologist to understand why, you don’t need all those clever experts and gizmos you’ve got in the studio. We voted to leave and we haven’t left yet.

“It’s that simple and as long as that is the case you will have a chunk of the electorate that is polarised and is effectively going to vote for the single-issue pro and anti-Brexit parties.”

The Labour party also suffered losses sparking leader Jeremy Corbyn to hint at a second referendum.

He said: “After three years of Tory failure to deliver a Brexit that works for the whole country, these elections became a proxy second referendum.

“With the Conservatives disintegrating and unable to govern, and parliament deadlocked, this issue will have to go back to the people, whether through a general election or a public vote.”
