Guess What Gigi Hadid Just Wore As Formal Attire?

When it comes to formal occasions, it can be easy to lean on the usual suspects: a classic little black dress or maybe suiting. But Gigi Hadid has thrown a new evening option into the ring. The model hit the streets in New York City in an unexpected take on special occasion dressing: she threw on some ’90s-style denim – light washed, super wide-legged, and even a tad ratty – and then totally dressed it up. Though certainly unexpected, it did feel like par for the course for the noted denimhead, who even instituted a denim dress code for her birthday party.

In an interesting styling move, Hadid paired her high-waisted jeans with a cropped silver satin blazer, a more traditional evening piece. It made for a snazzy ensemble that felt appropriate for a party setting, but still super fresh and cool, too. The two pieces were by Off-White designer Virgil Abloh, and first shown at the label’s autumn/winter 2019 runway show back in February. In fact, a more laid-back approach to cocktail attire was a major trend everywhere this season. Designers embraced a less-precious approach to formal wear: Tom Ford’s velvet blazers were paired with silky PJ-style trousers, while at Celine, glitzy board shorts paired with slouch boots were all the rage.

To counteract Hadid’s risky choice of getup, she chose more refined accessories such as an embossed croc By Far bag and simple suede pumps, which took the whole thing to an It girl-level of polish. So the next time you’re heading to an important party or celebration? Make like Hadid, put the gown down, and fish out those trusty distressed jeans instead.
