Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Won't Shoot Until at Least 2021

James Gunn is currently working on The Suicide Squad. The director was supposed to have already been done with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 by now, but there were some pretty major hiccups along the way. With that being said, Gunn has given an update as to when fans might possibly see the highly anticipated third and final installment in the Guardians trilogy and it’s going to be a while. Marvel Cinematic Universe fans already knew it was going to be a bit before the movie started production, but this might be a longer wait than most people anticipated.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will not begin production for at least another year, says James Gunn. The director was taking part in yet another Q&A session on social media with fans. While most of the questions over the past few months have been focused on The Suicide Squad, there are still a lot of people who want to know when they’ll finally see the Guardians team up again. With production not set to begin for at least another year, the movie probably won’t hit theaters until late 2022 at the earliest or 2023.

The Suicide Squad doesn’t even open in theaters until 2021, so James Gunn still has a lot of work ahead, even though principal photography seems to be going smooth. Gunn will then head into the post-production phase, which may or may not include some reshoots, and then the promotional tour will begin. While on the tour, Gunn might be able to do some of the smaller things involved in the pre-production for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

James Gunn was fired from Disney back in the summer of 2018 after some of his old tweets came back to haunt him. At the time, sets were already being constructed for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and production was set to begin at the beginning of this year. After Gunn was fired, the set production ceased and then the cast and crew were told that their services were no longer needed until further notice. Many assumed that Disney and Marvel Studios were looking for another director, but they claim to have held no meetings with anybody while Gunn was away.

Disney obviously changed their minds and rehired James Gunn, which was a huge deal for the fans, along with the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 cast and crew. Everybody stood behind Gunn and even wrote a letter to the studio to get him reinstated. Now that he’s back, the movie is on the way, but it’s just going to take a little bit longer than we thought. Regardless, it’s great that it’s even happening at all. You can head over to James Gunn’s Instagram account to check out the Q&A, which is still up, as of this writing.
