Grey’s Anatomy season 16 will be coming this autumn to ABC and the network has already teased that the new series will look very different. Station 19, ABC’s firefighting drama, will crossover with Grey’s Anatomy during season two of the former and season 16 of the latter. ABC has revealed a number of details of the upcoming Grey’s Anatomy/Station 19 crossover.
Will there be a Station 19/Grey’s Anatomy crossover?
Not only will Station 19 and Grey’s Anatomy crossover in the autumn, but ABC is promising a “shared universe”, with the shows crossing over “every week”.
At the ABC upfronts presentation, entertainment president Karey Burke said: “People can expect crossover events between these series every week.”
However, Grey’s Anatomy is due to start in autumn 2019, while Station 19 returns in late 2019 or early 2020.
ABC has not revealed, therefore, what exactly the crossover will look like.
Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva wrote: “I hear that Grey’s and Station 19 are going to play up the shared universe aspect much more next season.”
The writer also teased this will involve: “Storylines kept fluid and characters seamlessly going back and forth in what would feel like two-hour episodes.”
These crossovers come after the ratings success of the second crossover, which aired earlier in 2019.
Station 19 got its second-highest ever ratings for the crossover, while Grey’s Anatomy hit a five-week high.
Station 19 was launched as the second spin-off of Grey’s Anatomy after Private Practice.
The first Grey’s spin-off ran from 2007 to 2013 on ABC.
Station 19 and Grey’s Anatomy’s casts are linked by Ben Warren (played by Jason George), who stars in both.
The character left Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital for a role as a firefighter at the eponymous fire station.
He is married to Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), who still appears in Grey’s Anatomy.
The first crossover between the shows was in March 2018.
That was when Grey’s Anatomy featured a ‘backdoor pilot’ for Station 19 by featuring its characters in an episode of the show.
The second crossover came in October 2019 during Station 19’s second season.
