Grey’s Anatomy season 16: Is Dr Jackson Avery leaving Grey’s Anatomy?

Grey’s Anatomy has been on our screens for 15 years and continues to entertain its loyal fanbase. Dr Jackson Avery has been in the show since season six and has become a firm favourite on the show. So why is actor Jesse Williams taking a step back from his role on the ABC medical drama?

At the end of last year, actor Justin Chambers, one of the few remaining original cast members, announced he would be exiting Grey’s Anatomy after playing Dr Alex Karev for more than a decade.

In a statement announcing his departure, Chambers said: “There’s no good time to say goodbye to a show and character that’s defined so much of my life for the past 15 years.

“For some time now, however, I have hoped to diversify my acting roles and career choices.

“And, as I turn 50 and am blessed with my remarkable, supportive wife and five wonderful children, now is that time.

“As I move on from Grey’s Anatomy, I want to thank the ABC family, Shonda Rimes, original cast members Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens, and the rest of the amazing cast and crew, both past and present, and, of course, the fans for an extraordinary ride.”

Speaking to TVLine, Vernoff said: “I’ve known since the beginning of the season and I’ve been able to plan [Jackson]’s storyline [accordingly].

“Jesse is able to fly back one day a week – we’re just making it work [because] this was important to him.”

So there is no need for fans to worry just yet as Dr Avery is sticking around.

This also includes season 17 which got renewed at the same time as series 16 and Williams will remain part of the Grey’s Anatomy cast.

The next instalment of Grey’s Anatomy will be shown this Thursday, January 30 and will be called A Hard Pill to Swallow.

The synopsis for the episode reads: “Richard finds out Maggie quit Grey Sloan and is concerned about how she’s handling the death of her patient who was her estranged cousin. Bailey returns to work after taking some personal time off, although Koracick doesn’t make her first day as easy as she’d like.

“Meanwhile, Meredith thinks she might miss DeLuca, and Amelia has an update for Link on her pregnancy.”

Grey’s Anatomy continues on Thursday, January 30, at 9pm on ABC.
