Greta Thunberg took the world by storm in 2018 with her solitary strike against outside the Swedish Parliament. The teenage activist has since rallied millions of people around the world to take action against climate change. Bookies now consider Ms Thunberg a clear favourite to claim the coveted Nobel Peace Prize today. 

When will the Nobel Peace Prize winner be announced?

Every year the Norwegian Nobel Committee receives hundreds of nominations for the award by only one person or group of people is deemed worthy of the prize.

There are 301 candidates for the award this year, out of which 233 are individual people and 78 are organisations.

This year’s list of nominees is the fourth highest on record – the highest being 376 nominees in 2016.

The rules of the Nobel committee state the list of nominees cannot be revealed until 50 years have passed.

The winner, however, will be announced today (October 11), at 10am BST or 11am Norwegian time.

Today’s Nobel Peace Prize will be the 100th awarded since being found by Alfred Nobel in 1985.

Four candidates have emerged in the race for the Nobel, according to bookmakers at Ladbrokes.

Greta Thunberg is the clear favourite thanks to her relentless environmental campaigning since August 2018.

Alex Lapati of Ladbrokes said: “Greta Thunberg has headed the betting since Day One and the youngster’s odds have only shortened.

“She’s a shoo-in for this year’s prize as far as the betting looks.”

Ladbrokes have Ms Thunberg 4/7 odds of winning the Nobel.

Abiy Ahmed

The teenage climate activist is closely followed by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

The next candidate for the award is Native Brazilian environmentalist Raoni Metuktire.

The 89-year-old chief of the Caiapó people rose to prominence for her efforts to curb deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest.

Chief Metuktire is a vocal opponent of Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro and his commercial exploitation of the Amazon.

The Darcy Ribeiro Foundation has dubbed her a “living symbol of the fight to protect nature and the rights of indigenous people in the Amazon”.

Ladbrokes gave Chief Metuktire 6/1 odds of winning the Nobel.

The fourth most likely candidate to win today is the Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinta Ardern.

The Prime Minister was recognised for her swift response to the deadly Christchurch mosque attacks in March this year.

Ms Ardern swiftly passed legislation on strict gun control in the aftermath of the attack.

As a result of her direct action and unanimous support from Parliament, most automatic and semi-automatic weapons were banned from New Zealand.

Ladbrokes gave Ms Ardern 10/1 odds of winning the Nobel.

  • Abiy Ahmed – 3/1
  • Raoni Metuktire – 6/1
  • Jacinda Ardern – 10/1
