Greggs is launching more goodies soon – and rumours suggest there is both a vegan doughnut and steak bake coming

Veganism has seen a lot of success in 2019, much of it down to the rise of the plant-based sausage roll.

Greggs were first out and caused shockwaves with its non-meat roll, which sold out in record time and left customers distraught as they desperately tried to hunt down the popular baked treat.

Soon after, other brands jumped on the bandwagon, such as Tesco, Morrisons and now Aldi, which has just announced a vegan menu for 2020, which includes – you guessed it – a sausage roll.

As it’s nearly time for Veganuary, it’s very likely that we will be treated to more herbivorous products – including from Greggs.

Rumours are circulating, with the hype building around the possibility of both a vegan steak bake, as well as a vegan glazed doughnut.

Earlier this month, we received intel from two insiders at the bakery chain, who claimed that all employees are ‘aware’ that the plant-based steak bake is on its way.

‘Vegan steak bakes are definitely happening,’ one whistleblower, who wishes to be named only as Greg Greggs, told us.

‘I don’t have photos to confirm this but all employees I’ve spoken to regarding it are aware they’re arriving in the new year, and my manager has shown me stock sheets with “vegan steak bake” written on them, ready for when our deliveries arrive.’

Those with more of a sweet tooth will also be delighted to hear that there is now speak of transforming the classic glazed ring doughtnut into vegan format.

The current, non-vegan version, contains milk and eggs, which is a no-go for vegans.

‘Launched! The new #vegan Glazed Ring Doughnut at Greggs 60p,’ the caption reads on a post uploaded to Vegan Food UK’s Facebook page.

But don’t start running to the nearest Greggs just yet.

It turns out that this rumour might be just that, as people are commenting on the post to say that they have asked their local shops, none of whom seem to be aware of any glazed plant-based goodness.

‘Apparently Gregg’s in Norwich dont know nothing about it…,’ wrote one person.

Someone else commented: ‘This is not vegan. Please do not eat it.’

Then again, another fan posted a photo of her doughnut and claimed she is ‘just eating right now and they’re absolutely tasty’.

So, is the gossip true or is it merely hearsay?

The second insider at Greggs, who spoke to us last week and identifies as Your Secret Greggs Man, claimed that the doughnut would indeed be released today.

‘Releasing 27th December is the new glazed ring doughnut which is now vegan,’ they told us.

We contacted the bakery chain to find out the truth, and unfortunately it seems they have not launched a vegan steak bake or glazed doughnut (why, Greggs, why would you tease us like this).

That’s not to say these goodies aren’t in the works.

A representative from Greggs revealed to Metro.co.uk that there are new vegan products on the horizon, but there is no information available just yet.

So we’ll just have to be patient and stick to vegan sausage rolls for now.

Or, swing by McDonald’s on 2 January and try the brand’s first-ever fully vegan meal.
