Green Carpet Fashion Awards 2019: where style and sustainability meet

The third instalment of the Green Carpet Fashion Awards took place at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan on Sunday night.

Guests arriving at the event walked the iconic green carpet (made from Econyl regenerated nylon), wearing a series of white tie gowns of innovative design and fabrication that proved true sustainability nowadays needn’t mean forfeiting any glamour.

Hosted by Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana and Eco-Age, the awards recognised the commitment of individuals and Italian fashion houses to sustainability, and the work that has been done to embrace rapid change whilst preserving the heritage and authenticity of small-scale producers.

Attended by the likes of Elsa Hosk, Alessandra Ambrosio, Letitia Wright, Anna Wintour and Candice Swanepoel, the evening brought Milan Fashion Week to a glittering, star-studded finale.

Some of the biggest fashion houses dressed the attendees in custom-made creations of which every stitch, seam and embellishment could be traced back to ethical origins.

Stella McCartney, who won the award for Outstanding leadership in Sustainable Fashion, wore a black fringed dress, black pumps and a vegan leather Falabella clutch bag from her autumn/winter 2019 collection.

The sustainable fashion pioneer also dressed several of the evenings attendees, among them Amber Valetta, who wore a scarlet red sustainable viscose cady open back long dress, which she accessorised with nude satin angle strap high heels and a gold clutch.

Event host Livia Firth looked radiant in a silver gown by Armani Prive that had been brought out from the archives specially for the occasion. The gown, which featured a sequinned bodice and floral lace skirt, originally featured in the 2004 collection, proving good designs can truly be timeless. She also wore all natural Chopard diamonds.

In dressing those women, the big fashion houses delivered a powerful message of responsibility and commitment to change.

On the night, 13 individuals were recognised with awards, including Francois Henri-Pinault, chairman and CEO of Kering Group, who received the Visionary Award and Flavia La Rocca, who took home the Franca Sozzani GCC Award for Best Emerging Designer, one of the most prestigious of the night.
