Great British Bake Off’s Prue Leith has been worrying fans after being spotted on crutches, but now it’s been revealed it was down to a nasty accident while filming for the new series.

Prue, 79, was seen dressed up like a cuddly cowardly lion to kick off the new season, with fellow judge Paul Hollywood dressed up like the tin man.

Noel Fielding became Dorothy (because he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to wear the shoes) and Sandi Toksvig became the scarecrow.

However, it very nearly all ended in disaster when a freak slip of the foot cause absolute agony for Prue.

Speaking to The Spectator, Prue explained: ‘I leap out on to the yellow brick road, roaring – I feel a hammer blow to my ankle, and end up whimpering like the Cowardly Lion I’m portraying.’

‘I have snapped my Achilles tendon,’ she revealed. ‘Danny the medic, who has had nothing more exciting than bakers’ cut fingers to deal with for three years, finally gets to use his ambulance, wheelchair and considerable skills.’

This was why she was holding on to Prue and Paul during the final moments of the scene – because, like an absolute pro, she decided to continue with her work and get the last shots needed for the day.

The Wizard of Oz sketch kicked the new series off in style on Tuesday, with the hilarious sketch accusing Paul Hollywood of ‘not having a heart’ as the bumbly tin man.

Of course, he still managed to make more than one cheeky innuendo throughout his harsh remarks.

While we may have lost our first baker of the season on cake week, next week’s biscuit week is already promising to cause even more trouble.

Great British Bake Off continues Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4.
