Great British Bake Off winners: Where are they now?


The Great British Bake Off returns tonight on September 10 for more challenges and tempting treats.

Bake Off fans can tune in to Channel 4 at 8pm to watch the contestants in the famous white tent.

There are a whopping six more episodes to follow after this one before the grand final.

After today we will be a little closer to finding out who the ultimate Star Baker will be.

The winner of the Great British Bake Off will receive some flowers and a cake stand.

Many bakers go on to earn massive sums of money through appearances, cook books and launching cooking schools.

Here we take a look at all the GBBO winners so far, and where they are now.

2018 – Rahul Mandal

Rahul Mandal was a huge hit with viewers because of his sweet and apologetic nature.

He revealed how he had only got into baking when he moved from India in 2010 to study.

It was the first time he had left India, and he wanted to make friends.

Rahul isn’t interested in being a TV presenter, but he has a monthly recipe column in a national newspaper.

He also works as an engineering researcher at the University of Sheffield.

2017 – Sophie Faldo

Sophie Faldo went on to complete internships at two Michelin-starred restaurant after winning the show.

She has gone on to become very successful, even creating a nine-tiered cake for the 80th anniversary of HMS Belfast.

She told the Mirror: “I earned very little and ran out of savings. I like to have a stash fund for emergencies. I went through that during Bake Off.”

Speaking about the money she earned straight after Bake Off, she told This Is Money: “Since I did Bake Off I have earned thousands of pounds for short public appearances.”

Earlier in the year she took part in a TV show called Travel With A Goat, where she accompanied a goat for three days from farm to slaughterhouse.

She is hoping one day to set up a food-related business.

2016 – Candice Brown

Candice Brown turned her career around after winning Bake Off. She went from being a PE teacher to full-time baker.

Candice now runs a pub in Bedfordshire with her brother.

She also took part in Dancing On Ice 2018, and occasionally cooks on ITV’s This Morning.

On January 4, 2019 she appeared on Celebrity Mastermind.

2015 – Nadiya Hussain

Nadiya Hussain is one of Bake Off’s biggest success stories, and was known for her amazing eyebrows.

After winning Bake Off she was given the great honour of baking Queen Elizabeth’s birthday cake for her 90th birthday.

She has gone on to write newspaper columns, release 10 cook books, guest presented on Loose Women, and even had her own TV show – The Chronicles of Nadiya.

Her other TV work includes Nadiya’s British Food Adventure, Nadiya’s Family Favourites and Time to Eat.

In fact, since winning she has become a millionaire, setting up firm Nadiya J Hussain Ltd to handle cash from her enterprises.

2014 – Nancy Birtwhistle

Nancy was determined to take advantage of the opportunities Bake Off would give her.

She toured the country, released a book and ran a popular blog.

Nancy was retired when she entered the competition, and now she still writes recipes for her website.

She told The Telegraph: “Since winning, I’ve done cake judging, teaching in schools and after-dinner speaking.

“I write a recipe every day – I now have 250 – and a weekly blog post. I grow all my own produce in our garden; I even rear my own turkeys for Christmas.”

2013 – Frances Quinn

After winning Bake Off, Frances made the jump from design to baking.

She released a recipe book called Quintessential Baking, and has baked for clients such as Jools Holland and Clare Balding.

She now runs her own website, where she posts recipes.

She also makes the odd radio or TV appearance.

2012 – John Whaite

John Whaite was studying for his exams in law when he won the Bake Off.

But he decided to focus on cooking full time.

He made many TV appearances, including on This Morning and Sunday Brunch.

John even opened up his own cookery school in Lancashire.

But now he has decided to follow a career in justice and become a barrister.

2011 – Joanne Wheatley

Joanne Wheatley is now a mum-of-three, and also a grandmother.

She followed her passion and embarked on a career in the world of cupcakes and edible glitter.

She has released two cookbooks – A Passion for Baking, and Home Baking.

Joanne now runs a local cookery school from her home in Essex.

She also regularly updates her blog, Jo’s Blue Aga, with recipes.

2010 – Edd Kimber

Debt collector Edd Kimber became a full-time food writer after winning the very first season of GBBO.

He wrote three books focusing on puddings, and also became the host of a popular podcast called Stir the Pot.

He also did a stint as a resident baker on Alan Titchmarsh’s cookery show in 2014.
