Great British Bake Off fans reckon Steph Blackwell was robbed of the champion title after David Atherton was crowned the winner of the 2019 series.

The 28-year-old contestant was named runner up alongside Alice Fervonia in tonight’s hotly-anticipated final, with presenter Sandi Toksvig revealing the results.

Thrilled by his victory, David enthused: ‘I have watched this since the second series. For nine years I have been daydreaming about Bake Off, it wasn’t in my mind I could win this.

‘I was always the underdog but I managed to get through.’

Many viewers were taken aback by the news though, with a number of fans claiming that Steph was robbed of landing the top spot.

Taking their disappointment to Twitter, one person fumed: ‘Steph was robbed. Consistently good every week, star baker four times, David star baker zero times.

Viewers were gutted for Steph’s loss

‘If it’s based on one weekend in the tent then @BritishBakeOff can be done in one episode.’

Echoing a similar sentiment, another added: ‘Am gutted for Steph! She was incredible all season and one day ruined it all? She’s amazing!’

Steph had a few wobbles during the Bake Off final, with disaster first striking during the technical challenge when her souffle failed to rise.

As Steph accepted that her bakes weren’t going to come out how she wanted, she cried and admitted to the cameras: ‘I just feel a bit stupid.

‘It couldn’t have gone much worse, could it?’

Steph had no hard feelings though and was pleased with her journey on the show.

‘I have made some amazing lifelong friends, just the most incredible experience ever,’ she said after the winner was announced.

The Great British Bake Off is available for catch-up on 4OD.
