Great British Bake Off fans fury as show clashes with Boris Johnson's speech

Great British Bake Off fans have been left furious after realising the new season of the show will air at the same time as Boris Johnson plans to make an announcement about a national lockdown.

Fans of the baking series were unimpressed by the TV clash and even branded it as ‘inconsiderate’ as the anticipated new season is set to have a ‘dramatic start’ as one contestant knocks another’s cake on the floor.

One said: “The biggest proof that this government has no clue what it’s doing? Broadcasting their speech at 8pm whilst the Bake Off is on.”

Another wrote: “So who gets higher ratings tonight- Boris Johnson or The Great British Bake Off? Will people want to watch a collapsing Eton Mess or a cake competition?”

One added: “Just when I thought I couldn’t be more annoyed by #BorisJohnson, he decides to do a #CovidBriefing at the same time as the new series of #GBBO starts. FFS man the nation has its priorities!!! You work AROUND Bake Off.”

Another penned: “Putting the Prime Minister’s address to the nation against the return of The Great British Bake Off really is a peak 2020 TV ratings war.”

Boris Johnson will announce further lockdown restrictions tonight at 8pm in a bid to stop the spiralling numbers of coronavirus cases.

The Prime Minister has been mulling whether to introduce tighter measures in recent days as the number of confirmed Covid cases accelerates again.

A televised address, detailing a range of new rules including a 10pm curfew on pubs and restaurants, is expected this evening.

His address comes one day after the government’s top scientists warned the UK is on course for 50,000 infections a day next month if infection rates continue to surge.

It’s part of a busy day for the PM, during which he will also chair meetings of the Government’s Cobra emergency committee and his Cabinet, and make a speech in the House of Commons.

But the nation are also keen to see another televised event which happens to be on at the same time.

The GBBO presenters are finally back this week with the new season

The Great British Bake Off begins tonight in dramatic fashion as a contestant knocks another rival’s cakes on the floor.

The show starts with the 12 contestants challenged to bake six individual cakes.

Pharmacy dispenser Sura, 31, is putting her bake on the gingham table to be judged when she sees a fly and says: “Go away, urgh.”

As she turns around to usher it away she collides with rival contestant Dave Friday, 30 – and four of his six cakes fall to the floor, ruined.

Shocked Sura says: “I’m so sorry. Oh my god. I’m so sorry there was a fly, I went to shoo it away and I knocked it.”

Sura then starts to cry and hosts Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas come in to help defuse the situation.

Later in the Channel 4 show, there are two more disasters when 32-year-old project manager Mark Lutton drops a sponge and Sura herself sees her showstopper cake topple.

A TV source said: “In terms of incident and controversy it is right up there with anything that has happened on the show before. Whilst it is clear what Sura did was not deliberate, the series could not start in much more dramatic fashion.”

But which one will you be watching?

The new series of The Great British Bake Off starts on Channel 4 tonight at 8pm.
