Great British Bake Off 2019 suffers shock blow after fans slam final result

David was crowned the winner of the Great British Bake Off last night by Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood. But the number of Channel 4 fans who tuned in to find out who had impressed the judges in the final three challenges was down more than half a million compared to last year.

The series finale was watched by an average of 6.9 million viewers last night compared to 7.5 million in 2018.

Over half a million extra viewers tuned in to see Rahul Mandal be crowned winner last year.

The 7.5 million viewers of last year’s final was also the lowest figure for a Bake Off final in six years.

However the 2019 final was still the most watched episode of the entire series.

It also peaked at 7.7 million viewers and was the most-watched show on any channel from 8pm to 9.15pm.

The viewing figures come as new data suggests fans are not engaging with the Channel 4 show as much as they used to.

According to Vanquis’ findings, season ten has been one of the least talked about seasons of the show online.

Since arriving on our screens nine years ago, there have been many changes to the baking show which could have had an impact on fans’ interest.

When the show moved from BBC One to Channel 4 in 2017 Mary Berry hung up her apron and said goodbye to the tent for good.

Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc also decided to depart and were replaced with Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding.

Viewers often head to Twitter to share their frustration as they watch the bakers take on each challenge.

However for series ten, per episode, data collected showed an average of 50, 264 tweets were posted by fans.

In comparison, during series seven, there was an average of 213,784 tweets posted per episode.

“Week on week other people were stronger,” David remarked after being crowned champion.

“I was always the underdog and yet I managed to get through.

“All of it is a bit surreal and I am still trying to process it, but the whole Bake Off journey is non-stop and part of it is just having the stamina.

“Honestly, it was never in my mind that I thought I could win this. I have had daydreams of winning Bake Off for about ten years.”

The Great British Bake Off finale is available to catch up online on 4oD.
