Granit Xhaka has missed Arsenal’s clash with Chelsea amid speculation over his future.
Xhaka is a target for Hertha Berlin and reports suggest he has already agreed personal terms with the Bundesliga side.
The Swiss midfielder’s future has been unclear following his clash with supporters during the draw with Crystal Palace .
He was subsequently stripped of the captaincy by former boss Unai Emery but returned towards the end of his tenure, and featured under interim boss Freddie Ljungberg.
Arteta wanted Xhaka to stay until the end of the season but the midfielder was not involved against Chelsea, although he is believed to have been ill this week.
Hertha Berlin wanted to strike an immediate agreement with Arsenal , ensuring Xhaka can join them for their training camp in the States next week.
On the midfielder this week, Arteta said: “As a player, when I was going from Arsenal to City to start coaching and we were looking in that position, he was one of the players on my list.
“This is how much I liked him. I was happy when Arsenal signed him because I thought he was going to be a terrific player.
“He has done some really good things and now he has got stuck in a very difficult situation that, I think, was growing and growing and growing and one day it exploded.”
Matteo Guendouzi came in to replace the Swiss international against Chelsea.
