Granit Xhaka angers Arsenal fans by ducking from goal-bound shot after becoming captain

Arsenal fans are furious with Granit Xhaka after he ducked out of the way of Scott McTominay’s goal-bound shot against Manchester United.

The Switzerland international midfielder was named the Gunners’ permanent captain this week, and he wore the armband against the Red Devils at Old Trafford on Monday.

Many Arsenal supporters were unsure whether Unai Emery had made the right decision in naming Xhaka captain.

And the reasons for their doubt were thrust into the limelight against United, when he ducked out of the way of McTominay’s shot seconds before it hit the back of the net.

Former Manchester United manager David Moyes hit out at the midfielder on beIN Sports, saying: “Wow, come on. You have got to take that in the face. The ball doesn’t hurt that much.”

While Arsenal fans on Twitter also voiced their disapproval, with one tweeting: “Is Granit Xhaka the worst player Arsenal have ever had as captain? Aside from being slow, slower and painfully slow he can now add ducking to his repertoire.”

Another added: “Xhaka is a coward. Club captain unwilling to have the ball hit him. Shameful.”

Ahead of the Manchester United game Arsenal favourite Ian Wright questioned whether Emery had made the right decision in naming Xhaka club captain.

“I know they’ve chosen the captain but Xhaka should not be captain in front of this guy [Guendouzi] or Aubameyang, for me,” Wright told Premier League Productions.

“Guendouzi is leading by example for a 20-year-old. We know Tony Adams was a captain at 20, maybe Unai’s not strong enough to give somebody like Matteo Guendouzi [the captaincy].

“When you look at him here and what he’s doing, that is taking the game by the scruff of the neck and driving Arsenal forward, and he’s not been made captain or vice-captain. It’s crazy, for me.”
