Grammys performer Demi Lovato reveals new song was recorded four days before hospitalization

Demi Lovato is getting ready to take the Grammys stage Sunday to perform her new song “Anyone.” It marks her first live performance since she was hospitalized after a possible drug overdose in 2018, and the artist is reflecting on what that song means now.

Speaking with Zane Lowe for Beats 1 on Friday, Lovato revealed she wrote the song a couple days before being hospitalized.

“The song that I’m going to be performing is called ‘Anyone.’ This song was written and recorded actually very shortly before everything happened. So I recorded the vocals for it four days before …The lyrics took on a totally different meaning,” she told Lowe.

The former Disney star noted that listening back to her lyrics makes her recognize how much of a cry for help it was.

“You kind of listen back to it and you kind of think, how did nobody listen to this song and think, ‘Let’s help this girl,'” Lovato said. “I even think that I was recording it in a state of mind where I felt like I was okay, but clearly I wasn’t. And I even listened back to it and I’m like, ‘Gosh, I wish I could go back in time and help that version of myself.'”

The “Sober” artist reflected on her time at the hospital listening to “Anyone” and recalled thinking that if she’s ever able to come back, she wanted to perform this song.

Coming back to the stage for the 2020 Grammys, Lovato noted she’s feeling “excited and ready” to perform.

“I feel like I’ve been waiting for this moment for so long. And it’s going to be hard not to like go on stage and just like word vomit everything,” Lovato said. “Like I just want to go up there and tell my story. And I have three minutes to do so. So I’m just going to do the best that I can. And it’s only telling a fraction of my story, but it’s still a little bit, and it’s enough to kind of show the world where I’ve been.”

While she’s not fully ready to tell her story, Lovato said that it’s a process she’s becoming more comfortable with as time goes on. She teased an upcoming song where she’ll reveal more details on her hospitalization.

“I think it’s taken me a long time to be able to even get this far, which is performing a song that’s so vulnerable to me on a stage in front of all my peers and coworkers and even people that I look up to,” Lovato said. “That’s kind of nerve-wracking to think about. But at the same time I’m grateful that I have this opportunity to like sit here and talk to you and tell a little bit of my story. I think as time goes on, I’m going to tell more and more about it.”

Lovato has slowly been returning to the spotlight since her apparent drug overdose.

The 27-year-old singer opened up in November at the Teen Vogue Summit, saying, “I love the person that I am today.”

“What I see in the mirror (is) someone that’s overcome a lot,” she told Teen Vogue editor-in-chief Lindsay Peoples Wagner. “I’ve been through a lot and I genuinely see a fighter. I don’t see a championship winner in there, but I see a fighter and someone who is going to continue to fight no matter (what) challenges are thrown their way.”

It was Lovato’s first interview since her hospitalization in July 2018. And, she declared, “I wouldn’t change the direction of my life for anything.”
