Graeme Souness has explained why Liverpool have the edge over Manchester City in the Premier League title race.

The Reds opened up a five-point gap at the top of the table this weekend after beating Newcastle United and seeing City lose to Norwich City.

Manchester City edged out Liverpool in a thrilling title race last season but Souness believes it is Jurgen Klopp who holds the cards this term.

Asked whether Liverpool are now favourites to win the Premier League, Souness told Sky Sports: ‘Yeah, I think so.

‘With Aymeric Laporte’s injury I thought Manchester City would find it difficult to play against the better teams. Against the likes of Liverpool and the Champions League teams.

‘It’s not a big advantage for Liverpool – we’re still in September. But first blood is certainly to Liverpool.

‘They have the momentum, nobody is asking any questions about them. All eyes are on City right now.’

Liverpool are yet to drop a point in the Premier League this season, scoring 15 goals and conceding just four despite the loss of first-choice goalkeeper Alisson to injury.

Klopp’s side proved too strong for Newcastle this weekend and Souness has identified what makes Liverpool such a strong team.

‘I’ve been very impressed by them this season,’ he added. ‘They are a team that no one likes playing against because they’re aggressive and test every part of your game.

‘They play as a team and have players who will call out their teammates. That makes them very strong. You know you need to be at your very best against Liverpool.’

French defender Laporte is expected to be out for around six months after undergoing surgery on a knee injury and Souness is concerned by City’s defence in his absence.

He said: ‘It’s got to a concern. Laporte is a fabulous defender. They have to hope that Stones and Otamendi can form a partnership.

‘I think Josh Stones is just missing out on something, but he has the potential to be the best of the lot.’

Liverpool travel to Italy tomorrow evening to face Napoli in the Champions League, before taking on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge next weekend.

City are away at Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday night and return to domestic action with a home fixture against Watford on Saturday.
