Gothic remake gets full go ahead from THQ Nordic

The playable teaser for a remake of action role-player Gothic has been deemed a success and will be released on PC and next gen consoles.

Late last year developer THQ Nordic released a playable teaser of a remake for 2001 game Gothic. The idea was that if enough people played it, and enjoyed it, then they’d greenlight the full thing.

Luckily for fans it seems to have proven popular and THQ Nordic have now confirmed that after ‘unambiguous feedback’ it has entered ‘full production’.

Feedback from the teaser will be taken into account though, with fans apparently requesting a ‘gritter and less colourful world’. So feel free to insert your own joke about goths there.

Although it was an interesting idea, that other publishers may now look to repeat, the odd thing about the playable teaser is that you could only download it if you owned an existing Gothic game or another title by original developer Piranha Bytes.

That made sense on one level, in that THQ Nordic were only interested in hearing from existing fans, but not in the fact that Piranha Bytes themselves aren’t involved in the remake and it is instead being made by a new studio being set up in Barcelona.

The remake will be developed for PC and next gen consoles but will not be out anytime soon, and certainly not this year.

‘We are up for the challenge to develop a full Gothic remake which will stay as faithfully as possible to the original experience and transport the atmospheric world of Gothic into a high quality look and carefully modernizing certain gameplay mechanics’, said THQ Nordic’s Reinhard Pollice.
