Holly Ramsay has said that it can be “lonely” not drinking, particularly whilst in your twenties – with her having been sober herself for more than a year now.

The podcaster, 22, – who is the daughter of TV chef Gordon Ramsay, 55, and his wife Tana Ramsay, 47 – has been open about her sobriety with her 287,000 followers on Instagram.

The model told fans last month that she had achieved a year of being sober, with her explaining that giving up alcohol had been in the interest of her mental health.

And she’s now opened up further about her experience of sobriety, commenting that whilst it can be “lonely,” it has allowed her to “have more fun” and actually be in control.

Holly – who hosts the 21 and Over podcast – shared her thoughts on the situation in a recent Q&A with fans on her Instagram account, as reported by OK! magazine yesterday.

During the session, she was asked: “How important is it to cut out alcohol when you struggle daily with mental health?”

She responded with her thoughts and experience but noted that her answer wasn’t a “one size fits all” response.

Holly said: “For me, cutting out alcohol has made me so much more present, I’m able to have more fun and I’m in control. Alcohol and antidepressants don’t mix well. I made the decision to put my physical and mental health first.”

She admitted that not drinking alcohol in your twenties can be “lonely,” but said that those in such circumstances will find people who “don’t even care” that they aren’t drinking.

“It can be lonely not drinking especially at this age as it’s such a big part of our social lives .. but you will find the right people who don’t even care that you’re not drinking and are just happy you’re with them,” she concluded her response.

Holly announced that she’d reached a year of sobriety in a post on Instagram last month, in which she wrote: “I chose to take a break from alcohol because it wasn’t improving my mental health – which for me, comes first.”

She said: “This time last year I was at my lowest and I was scared but I made a decision to take control of what I could – and that meant removing alcohol from my life.”

The podcast host said it wasn’t an “easy decision” and then added: “I won’t say that this is forever, but this is for now.”

She continued: “Living without alcohol has helped me feel better and more present both mentally and physically.”

“Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had a year of high highs and low lows but I’m grateful I gave myself the chance to work through them consciously rather than mask my feelings (good or bad) with a drink,” she said in the post.

Towards the end of the post, she wrote: “It has been a learning experience and I feel lucky to be able to post this message today, to continue to spread awareness and break the stigma surrounding mental health.”
