Google has added a new feature called ‘Art Transfer’ to its popular Arts & Culture app. The tool uses AI to “transform” all or part of your photo into the style of famous artists like Frida Kahlo, Vincent van Gogh, or Edvard Munch.
The feature is powered by Google’s artificial intelligence tech, and while we’ve seen this kind of thing before, Google gives you a bit more than previous iterations. Not only can you convert a whole photo, but you can edit only a selection of your image, and the processing is far more in-depth than just adding some sort of basic “art filter.”
“Art Transfer is powered by an algorithmic model created by Google AI,” explains Google on its blog. “Once you snap your photo and select a style, Art Transfer doesn’t just blend the two things or simply overlay your image. Instead, it kicks off a unique algorithmic recreation of your photo inspired by the specific art style you have chosen.”

As a bonus, while the photo is being processed, Art Transfer will teach you a little bit about the painter/art style that you’ve chosen, so you get a little culture as well. And you don’t have to worry about privacy either (well, no more than you already do)—according to Google, all the photo processing happens locally on your phone without needing to send your images to the cloud.
