Google Pixel 4 leaks: everything we know so far about the next Google phone

In a savvy move, Google tried to get ahead of all the eventual leaks about its next phone by tweeting an official picture of the back of the next Pixel 4 smartphone back in June.

Unfortunately, that hasn’t done much to quell the information coming out about the smartphone, and now, new leaked images of a supposed Pixel 4 screen protector offer more hints about the device and how it will look.

Here’s what we know about the new Google Pixel 4 and 4 XL smartphones so far.

What will the Google Pixel 4 look like?

Google confirmed the existence of the new Pixel 4 in June and how the back of the device will look in these tweets. The phone will certainly come in black, the fingerprint recognition scanner on the back has been removed, and there looks to be an iPhone 11-esque camera array.

According to new leaks and renders over the weekend, we have some more information about the sizes of the phone. Ice Universe (per 9to5Google) released two images on Twitter claiming to be the Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL screen protectors.

These leaks point to Google ditching the notch on the Pixel 4 range and going from a rather thick bezel (frame around the screen) to house the front camera. The Pixel 4 XL is expected to measure 6.25-inches, a smidge smaller than last year’s Pixel 3 XL, whilst the Pixel 4 is a little bit bigger at 5.7-inches, ahead of last year’s 5.5-inch size.

There’s also quite a large cutout for what is presumed to be space for facial recognition sensors. Face authentication settings have been spotted in the beta for Android Q, the next Android software, so this is good to see. The Pixel is one of the few phone ranges not to sport facial recognition so it finally looks like Google is catching up.

Per renders from @OnLeaks and iGeeksblog, there will be a white version of the Google Pixel 4 too. It’s likely Google will release another fun colour like last year’s Not Pink version or the Pixel 3a Purple-ish

What about the Google Pixel 4 camera?

The Pixel range has easily the best camera of any smartphone and hopes are high for how Google is going to improve this with the Pixel 4. It looks like there could be two camera lenses on the rear of the Pixel 4 smartphone, the standard Google-quality lens, alongside a 16-megapixel telephoto zoom lens.

There could be a third lens on the back too, predicted to be a time of flight sensor, which helps improve portrait shots.

Google Pixel 4 specs

Inside, the Google Pixel 4 is expected to feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 processor and run Google’s Android Q software which will be released in October along with the new phones.

A big improvement points to the Pixel 4 range boosting 6GB of RAM up from the 4GB found on last year’s phones. This means the phones should be able to handle multi-tasking a lot better, whether it’s using lots of apps, editing videos or playing games.

Will the Google Pixel 4 have 5G?

As the Pixel 4 range will feature the Snapdragon 855 processor, found in other 5G phones like the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G, the next Pixel range may have 5G capabilities.

However, the 855 processor doesn’t guarantee it will work on the next-gen mobile networks. It seems pretty quiet on the rumours front when it comes to 5G so we may have to wait until October to confirm for sure.

When is the Google Pixel 4 coming out?

Google will be launching its new Pixel 4 range sometime in early October.

Last year, the phones were unveiled on October 9, with a release date of November 2, so it’s likely Google will follow a similar pattern this year.
