Google Maps: Unexpected event has locals flocking to the street

Google Maps is a handy tool for finding shortcuts or exploring unknown neighbourhoods. Occasionally users exploring new areas come across something unexpected. Whether it’s an unsolved mystery or a scary happening, all kinds of images are shared around the internet. Most recently, users on Reddit discovered an out of the ordinary occurrence that seems to have came at the perfect times for residents in one New Jersey neighbourhood.

A user posted the image to Reddit, which shows a scene that you might not see every day when walking down the street.

It appears that a fire hydrant has burst open, despite there being no fire around.

Luckily, it seems the incident could not have came at a better time, as residents have flocked to the street to make the most of the water.

The image was initially snapped by Google Earth cameras in July 2018.

According to WeatherSpark the average temperatures in the area at this time of year are a daily high of around 30c, rarely falling below 25c.

The highest daily average high temperature is 87c on July 21

The weather certainly looks warm, with golden sunlight flooding the image and passersby wearing shorts, vest tops and even bathing suits.

Perhaps a cooling jet of water is exactly what these people needed on a hot summers day.

While the fire hydrant is blasting out water, soaking the surrounding area, a flock of children in summer clothes and bathing suits gather around it.

They appear to be jumping and splashing in the water.

A woman has also pulled out a plastic chair onto the pavement, overseeing the children and enjoying the cooling sprays.

Meanwhile, other people walking by, either on a journey or to get into their nearby cars, also seem unruffled by the incident.

Commenters on Reddit seem to be amazed at the whole situation, likening it to something from a television show.

One Australian user wrote: “Wait those things are real? I thought they were made up in movies, never seen them in Australia.”

However, this isn’t the first time Google Maps has caught one of these “movie” moments.

Another Reddit user identified a similar scene elsewhere in the world.

The screengrab of Google Street View shows a fire hydrant shooting out water, with some even soaking the car’s camera.

However, a man in the image also seems undeterred by the unexpected shower.

He doesn’t even cross the road to get away, and instead seems to carry on his business, walking directly past.

Once again the weather appears to be sunny and bright, and while the location is unknown, it could be assumed this was another happy coincidence on a summer’s day.
