Google Maps is used around the world to help travellers navigate their way to brand new locations. It also has a lesser-known secondary use-uncovering global mysteries. One user recent discovered an odd sighting when using the satellite function while scanning Australia. In the south-west of the country, he noticed something very odd on about one vast expanse of land.

Is it possible that they are something to do with extraterrestrial activity?
Or perhaps they are some kind of secret military or government operation?
The reality may not be quite as spooky, as two different Reddit users posed their theories.
One suggested that they are locations of “wells or bores. Likely for sheep grazing.”
Another user wrote: “I’m no expert but this looks a lot like oil drilling/ fracking.”
Elsewhere in the world, another user spotted a similarly bizarre geographical finding in Beijing.
The blue oddity left them begging for answers.
When the camera was pulled back to reveal an ariel view of the entire city, a weird, blue presence appears to be hovering over large sections of the city.
Even when the user zoomed in to Streetview, the blue did not vanish.
Instead, it appears to be a form of “tarp” draped over various area
What is the explanation?
One user suggested: “My best guess is they’re there to prevent wind erosion of the soil.
“Some bushes and such are planted through the fabric to help hold it down, and fabric is used rather than tarps because moisture reaching the soil, and airflow to anything trying to grow is essential to help prevent that wind erosion.
“As for the colour, it probably simulates the sky to grass seedlings under it? Once again, pure guesswork.”
