At one point Pripyat was the ninth nuclear city in the Soviet Union, developed to serve the nearby Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. It was evacuated on the afternoon of 27 April 1986, the day after the Chernobyl disaster.
Tourists are advised not to visit the municipality due to the radiation which is thought to still exist in some areas, however many thrill-seekers find their way into the area to explore.
One Reddit user described their own experience visiting the area, saying: “I’ve stood in that room. GF and I did a tour when we were staying in Kiev for a football match. It was a day-long tour, we weren’t supposed to go in buildings but our tour guides took us in a few.
“There are still people working inside the exclusion zone putting a sarcophagus over the reactor that blew.
“Plus a working cafeteria which we had lunch in (have to go through these weird soviet radiation machines before you eat and before you leave the exclusion zone).
“The whole experience was creepy.”
