Google Earth: Sunken car spotted holds gruesome 22-year-old secret – can you see it?

Google Earth has played an important role in solving a 22-year-old mystery about a missing person. The find came after a previous resident of the Grand Isles neighbourhood in Wellington, Florida, USA was exploring the area on Google Earth Maps last month. When he came across a lake and zoomed-in he spotted something very unusual in the water. The resident believed it was a car that was submerged in the lake and contacted a current homeowner.

A drone was then flown across the lake which helped confirm that the sunken object was indeed a car.

Police were called and the ”heavily calcified” white sedan was retrieved from the depths.

But it was what was inside the car that caused the most shock to authorities – they found a dead body.

“Upon arrival deputies confirmed there was a vehicle in the pond,” a post by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office explains.

“The vehicle’s exterior was heavily calcified and was obviously in the water for a significant amount of time. Upon removing the vehicle skeleton remains were found inside.”

The remains were identified as those of William Moldt, who went missing in 1997 aged 40, according to the Palm Beach county sheriff’s office.

Moldt disappeared after going to a nightclub in November 1997, according to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System.

He is said to have left the club alone but did not appear intoxicated. Moldt had also called his girlfriend from the nightclub saying he would return to their Lantana home soon – but he never made it.

However, there’s no knowing the events that lead to the death of William Moldt.

Barry Fay, who found the car, was shocked by the discovery and said he had never noticed anything from ground level.

“Never did I believe there would be a 22-year-old dead body,” Fay told the Palm Beach Post.

It’s not the first time Google Earth has been used to solve mysteries – although not all are success stories.

On the east coast of Australia, a satellite image seems to show a plane among trees in Barrington Tops National Park in New South Wales.

A woman claimed the Google Earth photograph shows the crash site of an aircraft which went missing in the 1980s.

Flight VH-MDX disappeared on 9 August 1981. It was carrying four friends – Ken Price, Noel Wildash, Rhett Bosler and Philip Pembroke – and flown by ex-RAAF commercial pilot Mike Hutchins.

Unfortunately, the ‘plane’ is not the missing aircraft. The Barrington Research Group (BRG), which is dedicated to finding the aircraft has said the image does not show Flight VH-MDX.

RG explained that the plane in the photo is not resting on the ground but rather flying above it.

“This image is a classic example of an airborne aircraft being snapped by the satellite camera and there are many other examples across the Earth,” the group wrote on their website.

“An aircraft is unlikely to rest within the Barrington Wilderness Area in such a near perfect condition as shown in this image. The shadow of the aircraft is also visible on the ground.”
