Good Omens season 2: How Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman came up with sequel

Amazon Prime dropped its adaptation of Good Omens earlier this year with widespread critical acclaim. The six-part series followed demon Crowley (played by David Tennant) and angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) trying to prevent the apocalypse. Many viewers now want to know if there will be a sequel to the show.

Author Neil Gaiman has previously said he and fellow Good Omens writer Terry Pratchett came up with a sequel to the book.

However, their plans were never written down or published with Gaiman being the only one who knows the plot going forward.

Given the appetite for more Good Omens, Gaiman said he was thinking about how he could make any follow-up work.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, he said: “So, there’s no commitment yet for doing anymore but I would love to do some more if we can because I, like everyone else, love the characters. Like everybody else, I want to see more Crowley and Aziraphale.”

He added: “There’s more plot and I haven’t spoken about it publicly or on the record [about] what it’s actually about and never will. But there’s definitely more plot to go.”

Gaiman also revealed the two acclaimed authors came up with the plot while sharing a hotel room during an insomnia-ridden night at a Seattle convention in 1989.

He said he’d come back later in the evening and crept into bed, only to find Pratchett awake and unable to sleep.

As they both lay in their beds on opposite sides of the room, they started to plot a Good Omens sequel.

Some of the elements from the sequel did make it into the TV show, specifically the inclusion of angel Gabriel (Jon Hamm).

Gabriel wasn’t in the original novel but appears quite prominently in the TV show as Aziraphale’s line manager in Heaven, who is making sure he’s performing miracles as and when required to on Earth.

So, the second season of Good Omens could very much be on the cards – but it just might be a matter of time.

Gaiman said the cast and the crew had been expressing their interest in more episodes with Hamm even asking him.

Since the show’s release, Good Omens has received a number of away Emmy and Saturn Award nominations.

The show also received a warm reception from the critics and holds an 83 percent fresh rating from reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes.

The audience score on the site is much higher at 91 percent fresh, meaning the show is much-loved and crying out for more.

Good Omens was published back in 1990 and was nominated for Best Novel by the World Fantasy Awards as well as the Locus Awards.

The BBC is going to be airing Good Omens later this year, which is only likely to increase the call for more episodes.

Good Omens will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on October 28 and is available to pre-order now
