He even had a playful dig at Piers by telling the panel he “can’t abide people talking over their co-stars”.

The broadcaster, who has incurable cancer, said: “I can’t believe this is really happening, it’s so exciting.

“I feel like I’m coming home.”

Viewers welcomed him with open arms, with one writing on Twitter: “Wow I’m speechless by seeing the legend on GMB Breakfast morning TV legend Bill Turnbull. Thank you GMB so much.”

Another shared: “Great to see bill turnbull back on morning breakfast tv.”

A third wrote: “Great to see Bill Turnbull back on our Screens. Looking good mate! @GMB @susannareid100 @CharlotteHawkns.”

Bill and Susanna hosted the BBC’s Breakfast until 2014 when Susanna quit in a megabucks deal to launch GMB on ITV.

He then left the show in 2016 but is back on breakfast telly while Piers is on his holidays.

He previously told the Mirror: “I’m thrilled to be working with Susanna again and really looking forward to being on Good Morning Britain.

“We didn’t work together long enough and we got on so well. I was sad when she left at short notice. So for her to ask me to sit alongside her is very exciting.

“I’m in two minds about the early mornings. On one hand, it’s great to be back doing live television. The other part of me thinks: ‘What on earth am I doing? Having sworn never to do breakfast television again!’

“But here I am doing it and it’s only in the short term.”

However, the newspaper claims that if Bill proves popular then he could return for another stint.

Two years ago Bill announced he had been diagnosed with incurable cancer. He previously revealed he does not know how much time he has left and the cancer has spread to his bones.

He has had nine rounds of chemo therapy and is having injections of a tumour-busting radioactive substance, Radium 223.
