Godfall is first ever PS5 game – trailer looks amazing

The first ever footage of a PS5 game has been unveiled at The Game Awards, with launch title Godfall from publisher Gearbox.

Not only did The Game Awards unveil the name and design for the next gen Xbox but it also offered up the first ever look at a PlayStation 5 exclusive game.

Sony themselves weren’t there though, as it’s being published by Borderlands developer Gearbox and created by Counterplay Games – who haven’t made a console game before but are made up of a team that have worked on the likes of Ratchet & Clank, God of War, Destiny 2, and Horizon Zero Dawn.

The only information offered is what you can glean from the trailer and the developer’s description of it as a looter slasher, i.e. something in the style of Destiny but with a focus on melee combat instead of shooting.

Godfall is a third person action role-player in a fantasy setting, but beyond that there’s not much you can say for certain from the footage released so far.

That seems to be some kind of hydra-like monster making an appearance at the end but exactly what’s going on only the developers know at the moment.

The game can be played solo but is primarily designed as a co-op experience with up to three other people, again much like Destiny.

The odd thing about Godfall is that technically it was announced a while back but nobody really paid any attention as there was no trailer or detailed information – and certainly no indication it was a PlayStation 5 exclusive.

According to Gearbox it will still be released on PC, as an Epic Games Store exclusive, but it’s unclear if it’s a timed console exclusive and could appear on Xbox Series X at a later date.

Godfall PS5 release date

The game was given a release date of ‘Holiday 2020’, which is the same as the PlayStation 5. That doesn’t mean it’ll definitely be a launch title (it could be a few weeks after) but that’s obviously what they’re aiming for now.

It’s also the only confirmed PlayStation 5 exclusive so far, even though you can assume a lot of already-announced games being released next year will probably end up being cross-gen.

Like Microsoft, Sony hasn’t really talked about its next gen games yet and while you’d assume they had some sort of reveal event planned for the spring that hasn’t been confirmed yet.
