A runaway goat escaped from its field and led police and the public on a ‘wild goat chase’ that closed a motorway for 90 minutes.

Cars ground to a halt when the animal began weaving in and out of lanes on the packed M62 near Lofthouse, North Yorkshire, on Saturday night.

Footage filmed from a bridge above the motorway showed the cunning goat evade capture by sprinting between vehicles and away from sheepish officers.

Drivers left their cars to join the chase but struggled to herd the animal to safety.

Eventually, after an hour and a half of unsuccessful hide and seek, the goat was captured.

Highways England tweeted at 8.55pm: ‘Update #M62 #Goat – Traffic officers and West Yorkshire Police roads unite have successfully captured the goat.

‘All traffic released.’

A knackered-looking officer was later filmed holding onto the animal by its horns and putting a message out on his radio to give the all-clear.

The M62 had fully closed in both directions to allow for the creature to be safely captured.

It was on the loose between junctions 29 and 28, closing access from the M1 southbound to the M62 westbound.

Traffic remained slow from 9pm when the road re-opened, Highways England said.

The goat has reportedly been returned to the field he first made a break from.
